‘Jeung-san,’ comprised of the characters jeung (증;甑), meaning
“steamer,” and san (산;山), meaning “mountain,” is the honorific
title of Sangjenim, who came to the world of humans
from his throne in heaven in 1871. It is the self-chosen title of
Sangjenim, who incarnated at the foot of Mt. Sirusan (“Highest
Mountain”) in Jeongeup, Jeollabuk-do Province, Korea.
The character jeung (증;甑), the Korean word for which is ‘siru,’
refers to a traditional Korean steamer pot used to steam various
kinds of grain into a tteok (a traditional Korean rice cake).
Sangjenim’s honorific title therefore implies that he reconciles
different ideologies and religions that are unfinished and immature,
unifying them into a single whole.
